TUCON Can Help You Regain Your Cool – The Ultimate iPhone 5 Accessory

When you check out tomorrow, don’t throw away your keycard.  It can solve one of the world’s greatest problems… well, maybe not, but certainly a source of huge frustration.

The problem

You get out your iPhone 5 to admiring and envious looks. You look cool and feel great. And then you get out your headphones, which have inexplicably tied themselves in a knot.  Not good.  You spend seconds, minutes untangling them. You are no longer cool. Just humdrum.

The solution

TUCON can help you regain your cool in three very easy steps:

  1. Unravel your headphones (for the LAST time)
  2. Cut two slots in the top left hand corner in your TUCON Aria hotel keycard
  3. Wrap your headphones around the card

Now you will never need to waste valuable time un-knotting your headphones, with the added benefit of being reminded of the fantastic three days at TUCON with TIBCO.

Day Two of TUCON 2012: Going Deeper into “Everything is Different”

Raj Verma, TIBCO CMO

Day Two of TUCON 2012 continued to be a showcase of the technology that responds to the conference theme, “Everything is Different.” The day started with a recap of Day One by Chief Marketing Officer Raj Verma before moving to the first of the day’s themes, social media and collaboration.

But before the video rolled, James Murren, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MGM Resorts International made an appearance. He talked about how proud he was to host the event and how pleased he is to have TIBCO as his technology platform and partner in business.

Scary Statistics

Next, John Shewell, Director, Product Management at McKesson Provider Technologies took the audience through the “scary statistics” of healthcare cost and delivery. He pointed out that 75% of healthcare dollars are spent on patients with one or more chronic conditions, many of which can be prevented. Shewell also noted that half of healthcare spending is used to treat just 5% of the population. [Read more...]

Intuit Hits a Homerun in the World Series of Finance Software with TIBCO

The Major League Baseball championship games are around the corner, but for the first time ever, there is an added step on the road to the World Series. In March, MLB commissioner Bud Selig announced an agreement between the league and the Players’ Association to expand the playoffs to 10 teams by adding a second wild-card team in each league. From now on, the two teams with the top records among the non-division winners will have to square off in a one-game wild-card round. The change makes the championship rounds fairer and reward division champions. Teams can no longer play for second place and be satisfied. They must either win their division, or risk losing their chance for the championship by playing in the wild-card playoff. The only way to avoid this is to be the best, and in the world of tax preparation and finance software products, Intuit is the best. Intuit is the number one provider of tax preparation and finance software for consumers, as well as small businesses. [Read more...]

TUCON 2012 Kicks Off: Everything Really IS Different

TIBCO’s TUCON 2012 kicked off this morning with the theme, “Everything is Different.” From the start, the areas of Digital Customer Experience Management, Big Data, Social and Consumerization took center stage, beginning with the opening address by TIBCO founder and CEO Vivek Ranadivé.

While You Were Sleeping

Vivek talked about how to make the worst of times into the best of times, a reprise of his video discussion found on Forbes. He drew parallels with Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” opening words: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” This was a great description of where business finds itself today. The key to thriving in these times is to deliver extreme value and to reinvent yourself and your enterprise for the 21st century, he told the packed event.

Chief Marketing Officer Raj Verma

Chief Marketing Officer Raj Verma continued with the TIBCO vision that establishes customer experience management as a critical business imperative for every company on the planet. He talked about the switch from analog to digital marketing and what that means to the modern enterprise.

Raj took the audience through the significant expansion of the digital customer experience, from the fact that iPhone sales outpaced the growth of the human population, that 4.7 billion minutes were spent on Facebook and that 22 million hours of video were streamed on Netflix, all while we slept last night.

Before leaving the stage, Raj laid out the TIBCO two-second advantage, the ultimate goal of his event-enabled customer, delivered through automation, events, analytics, cloud and social. He described the TIBCO platform as tightly integrated and loosely coupled… a big advantage for organizations trying to find the right partner to excel during these times. [Read more...]

Connecting ActiveSpaces and Hadoop

TIBCO is pleased to announce that we’re making code available that connects TIBCO ActiveSpaces to Apache Hadoop MapReduce, Apache Pig, and Apache Hive.  Hadoop and ActiveSpaces both support data-intensive distributed applications, and so they’re the perfect match!

Hadoop’s HDFS™ is designed to hold files of petabyte size, but the architectural tradeoff that was made is that you don’t get random access to that file – you have to read the whole thing.  Hadoop has some other storage technologies like HBase™ that have some more random access, but they have nothing like the in-memory data grid that ActiveSpaces provides.  With ActiveSpaces, you get random access to all of your data, without ever having to hit a disk, and with peer-to-peer replication, keeping Big Data in memory is quite feasible.

The code that we’re making available comes in three parts.  The first part integrates ActiveSpaces into the core MapReduce functionality, and provides an InputFormat and an OutputFormat for ActiveSpaces.  Take your class that describes your Tuples, and inherit from the simple provided interface ASWritable.  Now you can use MapReduce to create operations on all the Tuples in your space, and chain them together in all the standard MapReduce ways.

If, on the other hand, you’d prefer not to write Java™ code, but would prefer to script your data flows in Pig, the code supplies a LoadFunc and a StoreFunc that allow full interoperability between Pig and ActiveSpaces.  Now the dataflows that you’ve designed in Pig can read from, and write to ActiveSpaces, taking advantage of all ActiveSpaces has to offer. TUCON 2012: Behind the Scenes

It is Sunday at the Aria Hotel in Las Vegas. Most people are heading to the pool or to the strip to take in the Las Vegas vibe. The hotel would prefer we were headed to the tables or slot machines.

But I’m here to look behind the scenes at TUCON, the annual TIBCO User Conference. It’s difficult not to get caught up in the frenzied activity which will climax when Vivek Ranadivé, TIBCO founder and CEO, takes to the stage at 8:30 on Tuesday morning.

He will be joined on stage by a number of senior executives from clients such as GE Energy, Citi, Hewlett Packard, PerkinElmer and the Golden State Warriors, but also some technology luminaries including Scott McNealy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and Thomas M. Siebel, founder of Siebel Systems.

Preparations began almost a year ago when the feedback from last year’s conference was analyzed and the key learnings taken on board. The effort has been focused on making TUCON the largest-ever gathering of TIBCO customers, partners, and experts. At this year’s conference, the delegates will get a taste of what an Event-Enabled Enterprise feels like and the transformation results that can be achieved. But this is not gradual evolution. The pace of business change is ramping up. The theme of the conference sums it up very neatly: “Everything is different.”

For the hotel staff, this is just another conference; Las Vegas is “conference central.” Last week in the Aria hotel it was iHeart Radio, next week it is Smokey Mountain and Matrix Design. But for TIBCO, it is the highlight of the year: 2,500 delegates, 52 client and analyst speakers, 20 sponsoring companies, press from all over the globe, days packed with exciting information and hundreds of networking connections to be made, all topped off with an awesome party taking over Haze nightclub with a top show called Legends.

Out on the sponsors show floor the Marquee sponsors, Accenture, HP, Infosys and Intel are getting their stands ready, alongside the Platinum, Gold, Silver and Technology partners. What is interesting is there are also frenemies (organisations who are both friends and enemies) here. IBM, a key competitor in many of the technology spaces, is also a sponsor.

Those registered for the Team TIBCO (North America’s #1 women’s cycling team) Bike Ride are getting some rest before joining Tara Whitten, 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, and others on an exciting morning ride through Red Rock Canyon.

Not every one of the millions of users touched by TIBCO’s software in over 4,000 customers can attend. While nothing beats the experience of being here, those who cannot make it can join the excitement through the The TIBCO BlogTwitter (be sure to include #TUCON2012) and live streaming of the sessions.

Feel like you are missing out? You are!!!

Con-way Avoids Lockout and Scores Hat Trick in Transportation with TIBCO’s Assist

Time has run out for hockey players and hockey fans in the United States and Canada, as the NHL imposes a league-wide lockout for the second time in eight years. The NHL commissioner, Gary Bettman, warned the players last season there would be a lockout if a deal between the NHL Players’ Association and the league was not reached. Unfortunately for everyone, the deadline has passed and players from all 30 NHL teams are waiting to see if they will be able to get back on the ice in October. The road is not clear as to when a new deal will be reached, and in the world of sports and hockey, this is nothing new. In fact, many players have a backup plan and decided to go to Europe to play in other leagues while the details are settled. In a different industry, that of transportation and delivery, there is no time for time-outs, fall-outs or lockouts. Con-way is a leading transportation and logistics services company that understands time is of absolute importance. The company operates through three primary companies: Con-way Freight, Con-way Truckload, and Menlo Worldwide Logistics. Con-way and its subsidiaries deliver services from more than 500 locations across North America and in 20 countries. [Read more...]
