I saw an interesting review of the Intel Developers Forum that seemed to indicate Intel recognising the onset of ubiquitous sensor nets, event streams and clouds, and the need to derive situation awareness from these events. Although they use the term “context”, I’m pretty sure that is mostly synonymous with “complex event” …
Intel’s PR mentions:
- Intel CTO Justin Rattner named rich, context-driven user experience with technology as the future of computing.
- Rattner discussed a new generation of devices that are expected to shape the next era of personal technology.
- While developing new ways of sensing, gathering and sharing contextual data, Intel is even more focused on ensuring privacy and security.

I wouldn’t say CEP is what makes it worth while. It’s intelligent computing that makes it worth while. I don’t equate CEP with intelligent computing. If anything, I would say CEP has a long way to go to start providing “intelligent computing”.
Hi Peter – of course you are entitled to your opinion. I personally think CEP is an important part of “intelligent computing”, based on the use cases we have seen in progress…
PS: Intel is collaborating with TIBCO in some related areas…
Cheers
If I understand the interview correctly, what Intel is working on is far more than just complex events. It’s the old “smart computing” idea that’s been around for 2 decades. It uses events, but i would say the goal is far greater in scope, and well beyond CEP as it is today.
Peter – Intel want to sell more ICs for more sensor-enabled world. So yes it is more than “just” CEP, but CEP is what makes it worthwhile (no point in collecting events just for the sake of it!).
Cheers
